The Bhutan Tennis Federation (BTF) had the opportunity to conduct winter coaching camps in different dzongkhags due to the winter holidays. One of the most important activities of the BTF is to organize camps, with the following objectives in mind: promotion, meaningful engagement of children during the break, talent search, and selection of players for national and international tournaments.
Yonten Gyeltshen was in charge of the camp in Wangdue Phodrang. Mr. Kinga Namgay, the school tennis coordinator and teacher at Gangthangka Primary School, was contacted for necessary arrangements. The location chosen for the camp was the basketball court in the center of the Bajo town, as mini tennis can be played on any flat surface.
The camp was attended by over 30 participants, divided into two groups based on age: under 10 years and under 14 years. The under 10 group had sessions in the morning from 10 am to 12 pm, and the under 14 group had sessions in the afternoon from 2 pm to 4 pm. The under 10 children were introduced to basic coordination, fun games, ball handling, and racket handling. The under 14 group was introduced to the basics of tennis ground strokes, volleys, and serve/smash.
The camp was held from January 3 to January 15, 2022, and all participants received a certificate of attendance at the closing of the camp. Mr. Kinga Namgay played a vital role in promoting tennis in Wangdue Phodrang Dzongkha and was acknowledged for his active involvement in tennis activities. Tobden, a 13-year-old boy with technical skills, assisted in delivering lessons and was personally thanked.
The camp was made successful and fruitful with the support of the Bhutan Olympic Committee. Special thanks to all the participants for their active participation in the camp.
